Speech title: What We Bring Across Industries

Does the industry we work in matter? Or can a software tester change industries and still be effective? What about the value a tester brings when they do cross industries? There is knowledge that might be referred to as specific and deep; knowledge that comes from working within a certain context or industry that can speed up a testers’ understanding of the problem space. Conversely there is also knowledge that might be referred to as broad and shallow where a tester does not know much about the industry but instead brings a depth of knowledge specifically by having worked in other industries. And then there is the knowledge of software testing practices that may transcend industry knowledge and provide a depth of knowledge that is about testing and not about the industry. Thinking about different backgrounds of knowledge helps us to realize, there is not one set of knowledge but multiple bodies of knowledge - and each has its advantages. What knowledge do we bring? What have we acquired that will translate to help us today and our future work?
